dark & light

Yesterday we decided to head out of South Dakota and into Wyoming on our way to Colorado. The sky remained dark and foggy as we left SD, although the fog cleared once we got out of the hills. The western part of Wyoming was really quite beautiful with the dark clouds and the bare ground. At least it wasn't farmland everywhere.
The highway we took to get to Interstate-25 ran parallel to a pair of train tracks. Remembering images of train cars filled with coal in NatGeo I wondered if that's what these lines were for.
Within minutes I got my answer. A train came rumbling towards us in the distance and I had a hunch what would it would be carrying.

We saw a handful of trains after that one, all at least a hundred cars long and all filled to the top with coal. Coupled with the dreary weather it was a depressing ride through Wyoming. The flat land was made beautiful by the random assortment of rocky plateaus. Why anyone would want to strip this beauty for such a dirty energy source is beyond me (oh right, it's cheap).

About ten miles from the Colorado border the sun could be seen shining in the distance through heavy clouds. Adam pointed out a double rainbow up ahead, leaving us excited for Colorado.
As we approached the state line, the colorful arch expanded, becoming longer and more vivid. As hills gave way, we saw just what the colorful apparition was looming over:
